Devil Or Angel 1 by wingdthing Devil Or Angel 1 by wingdthing
New piece for the week of 10/20/09. One of a kind polymer sculpture.

Something fun, an idea I had in my head for a while. A request from a friend made her come to life. Hope you enjoy.

***On this photo in particular, her hand looks out of proportion. It is an optical illusion caused by the angle. Please don't tell me I messed up. I'm sure I'll still get comments on this since many people never bother to read artist comments. ***

Devil Or Angel 1 by *wingdthing is wonderfully intuitive in its creation, the subtlety applied to the sculpture to fit the title. Little details such as the slipped halo, literally being held in place by one tiny black horn, as well as the cheeky mischievous pose really work well in making the view ask themselves whether she is really angelic or whether she comes with a darker side. When I first saw the images I thought "Wow, that's pretty good for ZBrush" but then I read they were actual freestanding sculptures... !?!

I'm not sure how polymer sculpting works. It obviously doesn't envolve a casting mold ('cus those poses would be impossible). I picture something made soft by heat to work with like a stable, durable version of wax?

Anyway, it works in wonderous ways. This particular one went for over $1300 on E-Bay (?). Yeah, you don't find originals of something like that very often so that strikes me as very reasonable.

Thank you very much! Polymer clay is a soft clay that has to be cured with heat. It's pretty much soft, but has to be kneaded to activate the polymer. Then it's cured in a home oven at about 265.

Yes, they are all hand sculpted, no molds. Each one is a true one of a kind. I'm lucky to still be receiving good money in this economy. Last year they were going for a bit more than this girl. But I am still very grateful that I get to create and share such wonderful things, AND get paid for it!

I'm glad you found me and hope you continue to enjoy my art.

Hello Nicole. I'm happy an artist of your exceptional talent found that sculpting technique so as to demonstrate to the world how it really should be done. Thanks for filling me in on some of the particulars. It actually sounds more traditional than I figured... at least at the shaping steps, although I don't know how its starting texture compares to typical modeling clay.

What throws me of is the coloring. Is the polymer clay very close to the flesh tone base color before and/or after curing? It has a translucent flesh quality that I would think would be impossible with applied coloring. Obviously certain areas have to have various colors but I would think the base color of the polymer is a made-to-order flesh tone.

Oh, and you have to be impressed with any artist that isn't afraid of hands... and you make fearless hands... and, yes, they are the right scale.

Well thank you! It is always wonderful to be appreciated. :icongwompplz:

I love to share what I can. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I think it is rather traditional in technique. Armature and clay, pretty simple. The textures vary by clay. Some are a bit gummy, some are really elastic. There is a similarity to modeling clay which is why I like polymer. They all have characteristics that I like. This is why I blend them to get the best of all of them. It's a fun medium that I highly recommend diving into. ;)

Gorgeous! And while a misproportioned hand may seem to make it imperfect, it makes it more unique and really shows to be hand made.

Okay.. seriously.. I thought it was a real person for a moment until I noticed how unnaturally thin she looked and how the big eyes didn't seem to be all makeup - then I started reading your comment.
